The sun had begun rising when we finally arrived at the boxing gym. Her hair was pulled up in a messy ponytail, bags under her eyes since we hadn’t yet slept, and yet she oozed with a flawless glow. She wore a loose green sweatshirt and black leggings and stared about the place, fascinated. A handful of the usuals were already training.

“You didn’t seem like the boxing type to me? Wait, are you secretly like part of some gang?” She stopped in her tracks, dead serious. “Because I’ve read books, you know?”

I couldn’t help but cock my head back with a confused smile. I hadn’t told her much about myself, but did I really look like the mafia type? “No, Clover, I work behind a desk. Like most New Yorkers.” Tension rippled from her body as I reached out for her hand.

“Nice outfit,” Terry, one of the owners walked past and winked. I was dishevelled with my suit pants and shirt from the night before. Stain and all. But in this moment, I really didn’t care. And no one was going to tell me twice considering the generous donations and advertisement I did for them.

Clover gawked at Terry as he walked past. He briefly scanned over her, looking between us curiously but didn’t say anything. I’d never brought anyone here. It was only ever Alex and me. But I wanted to show her this place, somewhere she could physically exert that pent-up frustration. It had in so many ways helped me and although it didn’t have to be this gym, I wanted to help her in some way.

“That was one of the biggest guys I’ve ever seen in my life,” she whispered sheepishly. I chuckled. Well Terry was a body builder and dual owner the boxing gym with his brother, Lorance as well as a local coach for both boxers and body builders.

“This way.” As expected, the ring that was reserved for Alex and me was empty. Being a Saturday morning though, I doubted Alex would even be in, he was no doubt still partying on some rooftop somewhere watching the sun rise with a new woman for the day.

Clover seemed to shy away from it. “You want us to spar?” she asked cryptically.

I slipped into the ring, adjusting the handheld pads. “No, I want you to let out some of that frustration.” Despite her hesitation, she followed through.

“But isn’t that what I was using you for only an hour ago?”

I raised an eyebrow, surprised by her tongue in cheek. I helped her into the ring and kissed her as passionately as I had only an hour ago. I pulled away with a smile, her eyes still closed as she was leaning in. How had I been able to resist this woman for so damn long?

She propped a hand on her hip. “And this is just all magically set up for us?” she asked, again skeptically, noticing that the rest were being used.

“You still really aren’t a romantic, are you?” I teased.
