Too Early

“What is Zara doing today?” his mother asked him when he was sitting in the living room with Max and watching football.

The turkey was in the oven, the sides made. It was going to be more food than the three of them could eat, but this was the first Thanksgiving he’d been home for since he graduated from college.

Though he hadn’t come home for a few summers to work while in college, he did come home for the holidays. He wouldn’t do that to his mother.

Yet he did it anyway by staying away after. There was guilt there that he shouldn’t have punished her for his beef with his father.

“She’s at Zane’s with Lily’s family,” he said.

“Did you ask her if she wanted to come here?”

He grinned and looked at his mother. “I know you’re hopeful things will work out with us or return to the way they used to be before, but it’s way too early to think or talk like that.”

“Why?” his mother asked. She handed a few puffed treats to Max to pick at where he was sitting on the floor and playing. “You two have a history.”

“We do,” he said. “Not all that much of a pretty one either. We both know that.”

She sighed. “I agree. I was going to ask if you’ve talked about the past at all. You can tell me to mind my own business if you want.”

He wouldn’t do that though there was part of him that wanted to say those exact words.

He felt he owed it to his mother to start over with their relationship too. To be more open and communicate. He needed it for himself and for his son.

“We have talked,” he said. “Otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to get to where we are now.”

“And you cleared the air?” she asked.

“I think so,” he said.

“You can’t just think, Ren. What you did to her wasn’t nice.”

He sighed. “It wasn’t only me.”

“You ended things. That is what you told me. Or was there more going on that I don’t know about? Did Zara cheat on you? Was she mean?”

“No,” he said quickly. “Nothing like that. I ended things because she wanted to be here.”

“And you wanted to be anywhere but,” she said. “I understand that more than most. Your father had a lot of regrets about things.”

“So he told you a few days before he died,” he said. “Not in the years between when I left and a month ago.”

“You don’t know that,” she said softly. “You’ve never asked or talked about it.”

“It seems you want to talk about it now. Tell me what I don’t know.”

“Not if you’re going to get snotty.”

“I’m sorry, Mom. You started this conversation. You know how Dad felt about me and my choices in life. It’s not easy to forget it when you lived it for years. When you know no matter what you did it wasn’t good enough. I won’t make my children feel that way.”

His feelings of hurt and being degraded were never going to leave his mind and he’d be damned if his child ever felt that way.
