Too Early
âWhat is Zara doing today?â his mother asked him when he was sitting in the living room with Max and watching football.
The turkey was in the oven, the sides made. It was going to be more food than the three of them could eat, but this was the first Thanksgiving heâd been home for since he graduated from college.
Though he hadnât come home for a few summers to work while in college, he did come home for the holidays. He wouldnât do that to his mother.
Yet he did it anyway by staying away after. There was guilt there that he shouldnât have punished her for his beef with his father.
âSheâs at Zaneâs with Lilyâs family,â he said.
âDid you ask her if she wanted to come here?â
He grinned and looked at his mother. âI know youâre hopeful things will work out with us or return to the way they used to be before, but itâs way too early to think or talk like that.â
âWhy?â his mother asked. She handed a few puffed treats to Max to pick at where he was sitting on the floor and playing. âYou two have a history.â
âWe do,â he said. âNot all that much of a pretty one either. We both know that.â
She sighed. âI agree. I was going to ask if youâve talked about the past at all. You can tell me to mind my own business if you want.â
He wouldnât do that though there was part of him that wanted to say those exact words.
He felt he owed it to his mother to start over with their relationship too. To be more open and communicate. He needed it for himself and for his son.
âWe have talked,â he said. âOtherwise we wouldnât have been able to get to where we are now.â
âAnd you cleared the air?â she asked.
âI think so,â he said.
âYou canât just think, Ren. What you did to her wasnât nice.â
He sighed. âIt wasnât only me.â
âYou ended things. That is what you told me. Or was there more going on that I donât know about? Did Zara cheat on you? Was she mean?â
âNo,â he said quickly. âNothing like that. I ended things because she wanted to be here.â
âAnd you wanted to be anywhere but,â she said. âI understand that more than most. Your father had a lot of regrets about things.â
âSo he told you a few days before he died,â he said. âNot in the years between when I left and a month ago.â
âYou donât know that,â she said softly. âYouâve never asked or talked about it.â
âIt seems you want to talk about it now. Tell me what I donât know.â
âNot if youâre going to get snotty.â
âIâm sorry, Mom. You started this conversation. You know how Dad felt about me and my choices in life. Itâs not easy to forget it when you lived it for years. When you know no matter what you did it wasnât good enough. I wonât make my children feel that way.â
His feelings of hurt and being degraded were never going to leave his mind and heâd be damned if his child ever felt that way.
