This Is Different

“Don’t be nervous,” Cooper said to his mother on Thanksgiving. He didn’t need someone to get him worked up too.

“You just told me you had a girlfriend last week,” his mother said. “Now I’m going to meet her and her family on a holiday. Of course I’m nervous.”

“You’ve met women I’ve dated before,” he said.

“Not in a long time. And this is different. I know it is. I can see it when you talk about her.”

It’d taken a week to bring it up to his mother. They might be keeping the relationship a secret at work, and he was fine with that. It was for the best. But they had no reason to keep it from family.

Morgan had told her family and he’d told his mother. He hadn’t spoken to his father yet. Not on the phone. It’s not something he was going to bring up via a text.

“I like her,” he said. “A lot.”

“And you did back in college,” his mother said.

“What?”

“I know my memory isn’t always the greatest,” his mother said. “But you’ve brought it up a few times recently about your time in college. I’ve put it together. You probably talked about her back then and I just don’t remember.”

“It’s fine,” he said. “We were friends back then.”

“Cooper,” his mother said. “I know my son. Maybe you were friends but it was probably more in your eyes.”

He shrugged. “I told you she was dating someone.”

“So that means she wasn’t aware of how you felt?”

“There was nothing to be aware of,” he said. “Are you ready?”

His mother shook her head and smiled. She knew him by now. He’d keep his lips sealed. There was no reason to say he was half in love with Morgan years ago and when he saw her again months ago it was like a match had been struck in his chest repeatedly.

He never thought she’d accept his offer and when she showed signs of it he would have done anything to not lose the chance.

It didn’t mean he ever thought he’d be dating her. But he wanted to be around her.

Then he told himself it was almost creepy in a way. Or some might think that.

If being coworkers or friends was all they could be, he’d be fine. Maybe. Maybe not.

Probably not.

He never expected she’d feel the same way. He knew she didn’t years ago, but whatever made her feel it now, he didn’t care.

He’d taken a chance and it was working in his favor. He’d do nothing to ruin it.

“Yes, I’m ready,” his mother said. “I put the pies in the car. Are you bringing Harry and David?”

“No,” he said. “Morgan told me to, but it’d be too nuts. Her brother is bringing his dog. Jet is a Boston terrier, not that big. Good mannered dog.”

“How do you know?” his mother asked. “Or does he come to your clinic?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen him since he was adopted at my shelter. I’m just going by what Morgan has said.”
