Chapter Nine

Hello, sunshine.”

Standing in the middle of the kitchen filling up a coffee mug was Theo in a palm-tree-patterned navy shirt, white shorts, and navy Sperry sneakers. His sandy blond hair was slicked back with a light layer of gel, and I wanted to slap that sardonic smirk off his face. His look was the prime example of why a person should always keep an eye on their drink.

I was lucky enough to have avoided him for the last five days. With him being with his friends most of the time and me spending the last two nights at Harper’s for “movie nights,” avoiding each other was very easy. But of course, while I woke up in another kissing hangover with my lips still tingling, Theo had to ruin the afterglow. His face was the ultimate buzzkill.

Seeing Theo reminded me of all the drama he’d caused in Harper’s life. Then I looked at Serena, and the guilt weighed in my chest. I woke up feeling as light and inflated with happiness, and the sudden realization of Theo and Serena as the newest additions to my life brought me tumbling back to the ground as if they’d tied a rock to the end of my balloon.

I hated the feeling so much.

Dad and Serena sat at the kitchen table, eating scrambled eggs with slices of bacon. A fourth plate sat between them with bacon, scrambled eggs, and hash browns with bottles of ketchup and Tabasco in front of it. I smiled at the fact that Dad remembered how I liked eating my scrambled eggs and hash browns, fully doused in equal parts Tabasco and ketchup.

“Hope you’re in the mood for some breakfast,” Dad said and gestured to the empty seat.

“Theo was nice enough to surprise us with it,” Serena said, and it almost seemed like a forced smile, as if to try to convince me how redeeming her son was.

Theo stood next to me with the pot of coffee, flashing a grin I wanted to punch. “Coffee?”

“No, I’m good,” I said flatly, not buying his act or trusting what was exactly in the pot.

“You sure? I made more just for you.”

“Positive.”

Right as I scooped a small spoonful of eggs, Dad said, “Remi, the four of us are going to have a family day.”

I shot him a look. After our conversation about how I didn’t feel safe around Theo or that I simply didn’t want to be around him, and Dad had said he understood, we were going to have a “family” day? Serena and Theo were not my family. Theo was not my family. The fact that Dad even referred to all four of us as a family sent a shiver of disgust down my spine.

“We’re going to take Serena’s boat out for a few hours.”

“I figured it would be fun,” Serena said. “It’s supposed to be such a nice day, and why not spend it out on the water?”

I wasn’t sure what would make me more nauseous, the seasickness or bonding with my new “family.
