It isn’t until that night in bed, when Audrey’s breathing has slowed, that I close the book I was pretending to read and roll over to take in her face in the flickering candlelight.

I don’t know how to put words to what I’m feeling.

Or maybe I do, but I can’t make sense of them.

The moment in the carriage. The jealousy at the stables. How I feel right now just looking at her, just being close to her.

Wanting to be closer.

I roll over quickly and blow out the candle, so I’m staring into the darkness, hardly able to make out much past the nose on my face.

Yet I find myself still acutely aware of Audrey next to me, the shape of her body in the bedsheets, barely a finger’s width away from me. I feel her in the way my heart is thrumming with a question against the fabric of my nightgown.

I squeeze my eyes shut tightly, knowing I should stop searching for the answer.

My future with Mr. Caldwell ticks ever closer. My father’s return even closer than that.

Soon she will be gone.

Soon she will love someone else.

Maybe she already does.

And that needs to be, will be, answer enough.
