ELLIOT

“And Eli was like, you thought you could get by this way? Ha! And he took the ball from the guy before the guy knew what was happening. The guy looked so surprised when he kicked out and it was only empty air!”

“Seth got the ball and scored, and that was the last point in the game,” I finish, rolling my eyes at Jack’s dramatic retelling of last night’s game. He’s sitting at the table across from me, but the word sitting only loosely applies. He’s practically vibrating, on the edge of his seat. One more part of his recap and I wouldn’t be surprised if he fell out of his chair.

Mrs. Benson laughs. “You were right, Eli. Between the two of you giving me the recap, I feel like I saw the game myself.”

I didn’t expect to see her today. I didn’t expect to see anyone today, really. I practiced a classical tune on the piano to appease a particularly grouchy Uncle Remington, made myself a sandwich, and headed to the park for the morning, just to be out of the house. I ate by the fountain and then went to the library for my first shift, and when I left five hours later, I planned on taking a long walk and then going home.

That plan went out the window when I saw a familiar head of blond hair on the steps. Jack had been huddled in his sweatshirt, obviously chilled sitting on the stone steps to wait for me. I’d called him an idiot for not coming into the still open library, and then he’d grumbled and invited me to dinner, claiming his mom wanted a recap of the game.

“You could have texted,” I’d said.

“Then you might have said no.”

I’d adjusted the strap of my backpack and started walking. “No. I wouldn’t have.”

“We didn’t get to use our new move,” Jack says now, deflating slightly. He sniffles.

“We didn’t need to,” I remind him. “We won without it.”

“Still would’ve been cool,” he murmurs.

“Your next game is Tuesday, at home?” Mrs. Benson asks.

“Yes. 4:30, against the Hawks.” I think of the last time we saw them, when Jack sprained his wrist saving my picture, and another layer is added to my anticipation of this game. We’re a much better team than we were even three weeks ago. Adrien won’t know what hits him. “We should do it Tuesday,” I say suddenly, looking at Jack.

Understanding flashes across his face, and he smiles widely. “Time to show Hayrienne what we’ve learned.”

My own smile fades when I sigh. “It’s Adrien.”

His smile deepens, mischievous. “If it bothers you that I get his name wrong, think how it’ll bother him.”

“Whoa, boys, what’s this about?”

“He’s a cocky player on the Hawks who has it out for Eli,” Jack says, after sniffling again. “He hates him.”

“He’s a senior. He doesn’t like that I was effectively blocking him as a freshman last year.”

Mrs. Benson looks between us, and I think she’s trying to decide if she should urge us to make peace or wish us luck in ticking off Adrien.
