Will wished Tristan and his father would show up the next day in the fields, but the black carriage was nowhere to be seen. It rained all day long and Will returned home soaked to the bone, though at least he wasn’t freezing because the temperature had stayed acceptable despite the downpour.

“You look like a drenched cat,” Ember giggled, while his brother brought him his second set of clothes and an old towel to dry himself off with.

Will knew she was only happy he was home, making jokes as she always did, but he had been unable to stop thinking about Tristan all day and his patience was frayed because of it. “Maybe you should try being out in the rain, working to keep a roof over our heads all day, then.”

She shrank back at his snap, unused to him being anything but loving to her.

Will sighed. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that. I just—” He ran a hand through his hair, “It’s been a long day.”

Ember nodded, biting her lip.

He held out his hand toward her, and she came closer until he could pull her into a hug. She rested her head on his shoulder and said, “You can take a rest in our bed.”

The words warmed him more than the towel and the new clothes. “Thank you.”

“What happened to your hand?” Ember asked, catching sight of his palm.

The black mark of the stone remained, though the lines up his arm appeared to have faded some.

“I burned myself,” Will said. “I held onto an item a little too long, and it burned me.”

“Oh.”

Will pulled his hand back, closing his fist. “Now tell me about your day.”

Ember did, and for a while, Will could forget about Tristan and the stone.

When the night came, he stood outside of Tristan’s mansion, staring at the front door as if it would give him answers. The stone was hot in his hand, as he squeezed it. Was Tristan even still alive? Had his father gone too far this time, leaving his son for dead in the horrible torture room? Did Tristan always have to pick himself up and leave the torture room by himself, or did anyone know about it? Did his mother come to care for him?

The front door gave no answer, and Will didn’t dare go inside.

The stone was, for once, quiet. Will let it go long before the shadows crept up his arm.
