Chapter Fifteen

Reid shot a glance at Boyle’s vibrating pocket. He withdrew his phone, engaged the speakerphone, and answered, “Boyle.”

Russo’s voice sounded over the speaker. “Our drones found what appears to be a precut hole in the wire fence along the southern perimeter. I dispatched two agents to investigate. There’s abandoned luggage in the same location.” She paused, and Reid intuited something was wrong. “It appears to be the same surfboard case that the suspect was seen wheeling out of the restroom.”

Reid’s heart picked up speed. “Is London inside the damn case or not?”

“The case appears to have been set afire. Forensics is on their way now.”

She felt her patience wearing thin. “Tell me someone opened the damn case.”

“I’ve instructed them not to touch it until forensics arrives,” Russo said with conviction. “The fire burned from inside the case. The body within is visible through small holes in the outer casing. There are no discernible signs of life.”

London always wore a simple gold chain with a cross pendant that her parents gifted her for her first communion. “Does the body have any identifying markers?” she pressed, trying with all her might to keep her anger in check. How could the feds not open the damn case?

Russo ignored the question. “I’ll have more information soon. I’m sorry, Detective Sylver. Truly.”

Sorry didn’t cut it. Now that Russo had her wife back, her head clearly wasn’t in the game anymore. Reid had half a mind to demand that someone else oversee the search. But she might as well bang her head against the wall because the feds were stubborn as hell. They had their own way of doing things, and it usually made little sense to her.

“We believe the suspect is no longer on airport grounds. It appears he escaped through the hole in the fence.”

“On foot?” Boyle asked, frowning.

“A black Ford Explorer was parked a hundred yards away on the other side of the fence. Said vehicle was reported stolen three months ago. We’re attempting to locate the owner.”

Boyle cleared his throat. Reid could tell from the look on his face that none of this was sitting right with him, either. “So your working theory right now is that he murdered Detective Gold, left her body in a surfboard case, and escaped from the airport through a hole in the fence and a conveniently parked getaway car?”

“Unfortunately, yes,” Russo confirmed.

“Don’t you find that contradictory to his MO?” Boyle asked, frowning. “Why didn’t he just take Gold with him? I mean, he ran the whole race. He was close to the finish line. All he had to do was step across it, literally, to reach his getaway car on the other side.”

“There could be any number of reasons for the sudden change in MO. Perhaps the fire was accidental. Or maybe he realized Gold wasn’t his type, after all, and he chose to get rid of the body to save himself the trouble of transporting it.” Russo sighed. “We may never know.”

She met Boyle’s
