Chapter Thirteen

With the new developments—and no update from anyone—Ellie didn’t especially feel like a nap. After a morning of playing with Meri and helping Kathryn load the dishwasher, she had to reluctantly admit she could use some rest.

Her mind kept going back to that moment in the woods. Lisa’s unexpected reaction, and the question how Judy Lawrence’s story was related.

Something Rogers had said stuck with her…about Lawrence being the target of a ritualistic crime more than once. She had escaped a serial killer, then his fan club. The main instigators in the group were still serving prison sentences for trying to re-enact his crimes. Ellie didn’t think they cared about the coins, even though they had paid attention to detail when it came to their hero’s M.O. Judy’s coins had been the trophy.

Now, Jenkins, a fellow coin collector, had been murdered by someone who left a clown mask behind.

What was the connection between those cases spanning over years?

So much for rest.

While they were updating their colleagues on their progress, Valerie called to notify Jordan that they’d be able to request Quentin’s records. Derek’s phone rang while she was still on hers.

“The hospital,” he mouthed.

“Thank you. I owe you,” Jordan said to Valerie, making her laugh.

“I appreciate that you acknowledge it. Good luck.”

“Okay, where are we at with Lisa?” she asked. “No bad news I hope?”

“No. She’s awake and ready to talk.”

“That’s great. Let’s split up? Wu, you want to come serve the warrant with me?”

He nodded. “Sure.”

“All right. Let’s go.”

As everyone got to their feet, there was a knock on the door, and Detective Rogers from Missing Persons walked in.

“Hey, I’m sorry to disturb, but I wanted to tell you I have Ms. Judy Lawrence with me.”

“What happened?” Jordan asked, aware that she sounded anxious.

“She reported her boyfriend missing. It sounds like we have a case.”

Technically, that was still Maria’s case.

“Damn. She seemed to be doing well. That has to be a blow.”

Derek had caught Jordan’s hesitation. “If you’d like to talk to her, I’m sure Detective Wu will take care of the warrant.”

“Either you’ll join me later, or I’ll get those records back to you ASAP,” Wu promised.

The truth was, Jordan wasn’t even sure whether she wanted to talk to Judy Lawrence, but she felt she owed her. Too many things kept coming back to her, and it couldn’t be a coincidence.

She deserved peace.

“Sounds good to me,” she agreed and then went to follow Rogers.

She was impressed at how Judy was holding up, compared to when she had last seen her.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” Judy said softly. “So we meet again.”

“Detective Rogers told me about Shawn. I’m sorry.”

“Thank you. This is not like him. And I’m starting to wonder, with everything…if I’m bad luck.”

“You’re not. Don’t ever think that.”

There was, however, something about the victim of a crime that attracted the worst of people. Their shared history had put them both on the radar of a disturbing fan group. Part of Shriver’s interest in Jordan was clearly related to that same story.
