CHAPTER 14

JUNO

After my shower I find Caitlin on the balcony overlooking the back yard, mug of coffee cupped in both hands. Early sunlight glints off her hair, limning her in flame. She doesn’t turn as I approach, face tilted up toward the clear blue sky.

I come up behind her, hands settling on her waist. “Good morning. Again.”

Caitlin leans back into me with a hum. “Is everything okay? You look upset.”

Perceptive as always. I debate deflecting, but she’s proven she can handle the truth. “There was a raid last night. Federal agents hit one of our operations, confiscated inventory. It’s a setback, but we’ll recover.”

Her grip tightens on the mug. “Will there be retaliation?”

I love that she thinks of these things. She may have been the youngest O’Sullivan, but she still soaked in the knowledge of this life. I shake my head, lips brushing her hair. “No. I’ll let them think they’ve won this round.”

Caitlin relaxes slightly. “As long as no one was badly hurt.”

“A few cuts and bruises. Nothing fatal.” I turn her to face me, holding her gaze. “You don’t need to worry. The situation is under control.”

“It’s my job to worry. Occupational hazard of being married to the mobster’s daughter, I guess.” Her tone is light, but tension lingers around her eyes.

I tuck a wayward strand of hair behind her ear. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Caitlin. Or to us. You have my word.”

She searches my face and then nods slowly. “Okay. I trust you.” Rising up on her toes, she brushes a soft kiss over my lips.

We’ve become so intimate in so short a time, that I have hesitated to say it. To say the words that spring to my tongue every time we have a moment like this. I’m about to say it now when my phone chimes again from my pocket.

Caitlin sighs, pulling back. “Duty calls?”

“I’m afraid so. But what are your plans for the day?”

She takes a thoughtful sip of coffee. “I have a hair appointment this afternoon.” Her eyes gleam impishly over the rim of her mug. “And…I have a job interview.”

“A job interview?” I try to sound a little less displeased about it when I see her face. “You didn’t tell me you were—”

“Do you object to me having a life outside this townhouse?”

I know that tone. I’ve heard it often enough to recognize the warning. “Far be it from me to restrict your freedoms. Just try not to get arrested.”

Caitlin laughs, swatting my shoulder. “No promises. Now go on, before your minions storm the place looking for you.”

I pause in the doorway, looking back at her glowing in the soft morning light. Committing this moment to memory.

“Have a good day, Caitlin. I’ll see you tonight.”

Her answering smile warms me straight down to my bones. “See you tonight, Juno.”
