My name is Fatima Daas.

I’m French of Algerian descent.

My parents and my sisters were born in Algeria.

I was born in France.

My father would always say that words are “for show,” that only actions count.

He would say smata, which means over-the-top, to the point of disgust, whenever he saw two people on TV tell each other, “I love you.”

Incidentally, I think it’s terrible to say “I love you.”

I think it’s just as terrible not to say it.

To fail, to stop yourself.

Love was taboo in our home. So were shows of affection, and sexuality.

When my sisters managed to convince our father to let us watch Charmed on TV (because there was only the one television, which was in my parents’ bedroom), all it took was a man’s hand brushing against a woman’s for my father to say khmaj and change the channel immediately.

Khmaj means rotten.
