Chapter Twenty-six

Casey shuffled papers on her desk, then practically stuck her nose against the screen as Malone walked over, hoping he wouldn’t stop. He did.

“Got something interesting?”

She leaned back in her chair. “Just kinda going over everything. I visited with a couple of Griffin’s neighbors again yesterday. Nothing new. It’s a total dead end.”

He stood by her desk, looking pointedly at Tori’s empty chair. “You heard from Hunter?”

“No sir. Well, not exactly.”

He raised an eyebrow. “What does that mean?”

“I mean—” She paused, knowing she didn’t dare tell him anything. “I talked to Sam. And, you know, Tori is Tori.”

“Does that mean we’ll see her today or not?”

Casey stared at him, blinking several times. “I’m gonna say no. She said she was taking a few days, right?”

“Right. I just didn’t think she could stand to be away that long. Got some news about her family’s case. They’re not going to close it, after all. Finding the gun in Griffin’s safe is circumstantial evidence only, despite the many photos of Hunter that he had.”

“And the confession letter?”

“As far as everyone is concerned, it doesn’t exist. I don’t think it much matters anyway. Tori knows who did it and that person is dead. I would think in her mind, the case is closed regardless if it’s official or not.”

God, did he not know Tori at all? Closed? Oh, in her mind, the case was so not closed. But she said nothing, simply nodding at him. He went back to his office, and she let out a sigh. The ringing of her cell—Tori’s ringtone—made her snatch it up.

“You okay?” she asked quickly.

“I’m fine, O’Connor. Are you?”

“The lieutenant was just questioning me. Asking if I’d talked to you and if you were coming in today.” She got up and headed down the hallway for some privacy. “Missed you at dinner last night.”

“I had things to do. And I need a favor.”

“Anything. What’s up?”

“I need you to get with Denton PD. They responded to a murder on Monday, same day as Charles Griffin. Lieutenant Adam Staley. Retired. Dallas PD.”

Casey looked around, making sure no one was watching. “Is he one on your list?”

“Yeah.”

“Holy shit. That can’t be a coincidence.”

“No, it can’t. See what they’ve got. See how similar it is to Griffin. From what I’ve been able to find out, they have a partial plate from a neighbor’s security camera.”

“How do you know that?”

“I just do, O’Connor. Will you look into it?”

“Yeah, of course.” She paused. “What are you doing today?”

Tori gave a quick laugh. “You know what I’m doing, Casey. And you won’t be there to follow me around.”

“Will you at least be careful?”

“Promise. Talk to you later.”

Casey blew out a heavy breath as she pocketed her phone, then walked nonchalantly back to her desk. She glanced once in the direction of Malone’s office, but he was on the phone, his back to her. She quickly looked up the information for Denton PD and picked up her own phone.
