“I was so scared on the street. It just suddenly hit me.”

She nodded, placed her arm around me, and led me to the kitchen. She felt warm and solid.

“You smell heavenly,” she said.

“Blue orchids. I’ll bring some with me next time.”

“Please do!”

“I don’t need tea!” I insisted in a wavering voice when I saw her about to put the kettle on. She grabbed my hands tight and noticed I was trembling like a leaf.

“It’ll pass,” I apologized.

“Take a warm bath. You can use the children’s bathroom,” she offered. “My clever husband has installed a kind of boiler there.”

“I don’t want to disturb them. It’s nearly two o’clock!” I resisted.

“You don’t have to be concerned about my little angels. They sleep soundly. But if you don’t want to for other reasons…”
