CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The first week of the new millennium sucked. Something definitely hadn’t been right between her and Tamika on New Year’s Eve, and it was all Susan could think about. But at least the holidays were behind her.

Christmas and New Year’s had fallen on Mondays, and on Tuesdays, Kevin was usually only there until noon, working out front while she did inventory and ordering. Since she hadn’t worked with Kevin much for two weeks, she was especially excited to go back to work today. She was determined to adjust her attitude, and a fresh week and getting back to her regular work week was just what she needed. So, she’d had one crappy week. It didn’t mean the whole year was ruined.

She arrived at work early again, this time hoarding an array of books that she’d had her eye on for weeks. She walked through the quiet rows and conservatively chose only five titles, knowing she usually went home with at least half of what landed on her desk.

Her office was looking better these days. Ever since Kevin had spruced up his area more and more, he’d inspired her to do the same. Nature pictures adorned the once-bare walls. She’d bought herself a throw rug, a lamp, and some colorful office supplies, including a giant blue paisley stationery box so she could sneak a letter to Fiona whenever she wanted. Her personal favorite touch was the grumpy fairy figurine that her mother had gotten her for Christmas. Tamika thought it was rather odd, and while Susan considered adding it to her cluttered altar, she decided it looked best here on her desk. While, for many years, she’d been reluctant to be too out at work, for the first time, she proudly displayed her and Tamika’s wedding picture in the center of the photo collage she’d put together. It was pretty amazing how a little change and character could improve the energy of a space.

She walked in, flicking on the lamp and setting her books down. Her memories stared back at her from the photo collage: Emily’s piercing green eyes, she and her mom at Christmas, the picture of the purple lupin from Fiona, and one of her and DJ at high school graduation. Her office was so cozy now. Some days, it felt as if it displayed her personality even more than her own home did.

She laid all four books out side-by-side, deciding which to crack open first. Handbook for the Heart, an inspiring book of spiritual essays, would most certainly come home with her so she could save that one for later. The one about tarot and oracle readings intrigued her. Although she wasn’t sure what oracle was, when she was little, her mom, gramma, and even some of her Jesus-loving aunts had gone to many spiritual classes and were deep into tarot, and this seemed similar. Both the books on crystals and animal communication seemed interesting but were maybe deeper rabbit holes than she wanted to dive into. In the end, she indulged in the Llewellyn Guide to Kitchen Witchery until Kevin arrived.
