Heath

Our little wolf was playing a dangerous game, running away from our pack like that. Didn’t she realize she was tempting my wolf? He was excited to see the small woman with long white hair fleeing into the forest… his domain.

Chase!

As I struggled to rein in my wolf, I heard Gage doing the same for Flint inside. “Heath will bring her back to us.”

I would, of course. Not just because my pack alpha demanded it, but because my wolf wouldn’t accept her departure. With the scent of her upcoming heat in my nostrils, my wolf was desperate to protect her and to claim her.

I was happy to protect her. Claiming her was out of the question.

Freya twisted to look over her shoulder at me. From here, my heightened hearing easily picked up her tiny whimper, and the fear in her eyes made my wolf go wild.

Protect, he howled within me, even though it was us she was afraid of.

I ducked inside to grab my sling bag and a gun, just in case we ran into anyone my wolf couldn’t handle. The Howling Echo survived as long as we had because we always took precautions.

“Don’t worry, Flint,” I told him on the way out. “I’ll bring her back.”

At first, I wasn’t entirely sure why Gage had sent me instead of Flint. The only reason I could think of was because Gage didn’t trust Flint not to run away with her. The two of them might never be back. But she stood a much better chance of making it through her heat with the protection of three alphas instead of one.

Gage knew I would bring her back. Flint might not.

By the time I entered the forest where I’d last seen Freya, she was lost to me, at least visually. I followed her on two feet with the gun at my hip. Shifting to my wolf form would probably only scare her more.

I wasn’t entirely sure what had prompted her to leave, but I didn’t really think it was for our sakes. She’d gotten a wild look in her beautiful snow blue eyes before she rushed outside. It was the same look she’d had just before she pushed her plate toward me and tried to get me to take her sausage.

Despite her lack of pack marks, I no longer doubted that she had lived among the Ironwood pack. The way she’d talked with Flint yesterday about her experiences had been genuine. Perhaps the Ironwood pack alpha refused to mark stray wolves and refugees from other packs, whether they’d joined Ironwood as children or not. Without his mark, they would be left outside the safety of the pack bond to better keep them as slaves. It wouldn’t surprise me.

Whatever the reason for her lack of marks, the Ironwood pack had done a number on her. If I ever got the chance to beat the pack alpha and his son senseless, I might not stop until they were a pulp. She deserved better than to be treated as the worthless, lowest member of a pack.
