You’d think that numbers wouldn’t be like socks—that your child could lose them or mismatch them. Numbers can, and do, get lost or mixed up for those who do not understand the organization of the digits in place value and the organization order of the number line. Math decluttering through organization and ordering reduces the confusion around numbers. Decluttering makes the mathematics clearer, just as decluttering the rooms in your house makes things easier to find.

Many more organizational diagrams join place value and the number line to help manage the numbers in mathematics. As described at the beginning of this chapter, to organize is to identify common characteristics, sort by these common characteristics, describe the categories for those common characteristics, and then eventually assign names or symbols to those categories. A few of the more prevalent organizers that you probably recognize are used for classifying and recognizing common characteristics or trends and are included in figure 6.9. Math Aficionados, and now your child too, have several ways to organize numbers.
