Other perceptions

India being a diverse cultural and political entity, is quiet cacophonous to pronounce this diversity every now and then. These viewpoints could be reflected in extreme rightist, rightist, centrist and leftist and extreme leftist five points of views at political level. This, in other words is also a reflection of the varied approaches the Indian people hold to the issue of Tibet.

The first one could be attributed to Fernandes’ Samata Party. The Party however, is not a mainstream political party in India; however, the role of the smaller parties, especially during the times of coalition politics should not be undermined. Fernandes is the diehard supporter of Tibetan independence. Tried to sell ‘China threat’ theory, while India’s defense minister, but played down the rhetoric very soon. The party as such is a one man show; therefore his party’s views could be taken as Fernandes’ views. This perspective has been losing its currency with the aging leader and his deteriorating health.

Apart from Fernandes’ Party, yet another outfit with extreme right-wing thinking of Hindu fundamentalists has also emerged off late that fully support Tibetan independence. This is represented by the organizations such as ‘Abhinava Bharata’ and thinks on the lines of establishing a Hindu nation in India. The establishment of a Hindu nation has all along been the Goal of the Rashtritya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), however, this has not found much appeal in public. That’s why Vajpayee himself being associated with the RSS could not divert from the secular agenda of earlier Congress governments when as the prime Minister of India. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has been supporting on and off the line taken by the RSS or rather has been asked to tow the RSS line by RSS ideologues. If the recent reports are to be believed, the transcripts of alleged conversations between those accused in the Malegaon blast case, the forensic examination of Mahant Sudhakar Dwivedi’s laptops and statements of witnesses show that the main conspirators sought to gain inspiration from conflicts and campaigns around the world to justify their need for a new constitution and a new government-in-exile along the TGIE lines. For instance, the Tibet issue allegedly found prominence at conspiracy meetings and the accused are believed to have talked about the plight of Tibetans under the Chinese rule, the influence of those given refuge in India and the platform at which they have to lobby international opinion in their favor. Dwivedi’s laptop also contained a text file named ‘Tibet ki durdasha ke jimmedar’ (those responsible for Tibet’s plight), which has been submitted to the court as evidence, according to the charge sheet. Dwivedi and Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, named the main conspirators in the charge sheet, along with some unnamed witnesses, allegedly discussed how they ‘were hoping that Cambodia, Nepal, Thailand, Bharat [India], Bhutan, Japan and Korea become one Hindu nation’, at a conspiracy meeting said to have been held on 26 January 2009.15 The group does not hold much support in India, as they preach extreme measures not very different from those advocated by Muslim terror groups.
