Georgiana and the Bennet girls were in for a shock when it came time to dine, for, the place cards that they had not an hour before studied had been moved. Jane was now across the table from them all, seated next to Eric Fitzwilliam and nearer to the other gentlemen of their party. Elizabeth, too, was switched and found herself out of view of both Lydia and Georgiana, and separated from Anne de Bourgh by a man she had not before met and would not meet until halfway through the first course, as he was engrossed in all but verbally attacking the poor, shy Anne. When Miss de Bourgh did not answer one of his three or so questions posed to her, he rattled on as though he had not meant to hear her opinion in any case.

Elizabeth cleared her throat and took the opportunity to rescue Miss Anne from her distress as best she could when the man glanced sideways at her.

“Forgive my intrusion, I could not help but overhear your interest in horseback riding.” It was the topic of his statements at least three minutes back, but she had not understood what he at most previously been speaking about and, she guessed, Anne hadn’t either.

“It is not that I set out to be different,” Elizabeth answered quickly, “but I would have to state my preference as appreciating long walks and short rides.”

The man looked between them, utterly lost as to how he could again regain control of the conversation.

“In a downpour,” Anne said with a slight smirk, “I am sure most would say that they would like neither.”

“In that, we can all agree. I am glad we have found common ground.” Elizabeth smiled at her and had it returned unabashedly, though the man’s pathetic mutterings obscured the sentiment somewhat.

“And you are?” he demanded haughtily of Elizabeth.

“Forgive me, Sir Hathrope,” said Anne, “this is Miss Elizabeth Bennet. She and her sisters are guests of the Darcy’s.”

The man’s eyes widened significantly and flew to observe Mr. Darcy and crane his neck to catch sight of Miss Darcy before landing back on Elizabeth to let her know what a pleasure it was to make her acquaintance. He sat in affected silence whilst Anne and Elizabeth discussed how Elizabeth had come to be acquainted with her family.

“I did not know them
