CHAPTER NINETEEN

ANALISE

I walk through the courtyard thinking about this past week and as distracted as I am, I’m still able to spot Delilah as I get closer to the table where she’s set up. She’s got her head in a book and doesn’t notice me, but I could spot her a mile away. Nobody on this earth has golden curls like her.

I’ve been trying to find her without asking Enzo or Drake because I didn’t want them to be around when I talked to her. At least the first time seeing her after so long of not having any contact.

She’s so focused on her book that she doesn’t even look up when I get to her table.

“Delilah,” I say. She looks up immediately.

“Oh my god,” she says, tossing her book to the table before springing up and rushing over to me. “Analise.”

She wraps her arms around my neck and pulls me to her. I put my hands around her lower back and squeeze her just as tight as she’s squeezing me.

“How the fuck are you?” I ask when I pull back.

“Eh,” she says. “I am not settling into private school life very well, but I’m managing.”

“Girls being mean?” I ask.

“How’d you know?” she says sarcastically.

“Call it intuition or something,” I say, shaking my head.

We laugh together before sitting down at the table where she’s studying. A few people are watching us like we’re the next trending topic on the school’s forums and it annoys the hell out of me. I can see it now. Analise Fuentes seen mingling with the new girl…

People are so stupid.

“So what classes are you taking? I looked for you for a while after Enzo told me you were here,” I tell her.

“You’re probably smarter than me. I was told I’m in the remedial courses or something,” she says before shrugging her shoulders. “Which is crazy because even in these classes I still study constantly. I don’t know how you people do it.”

“I was homeschooled before coming here and it was way worse and way more boring,” I tell her with a grin. “If you ever need help with a class I don’t mind seeing if I can. I’m not very smart, but I know a few people who are.”

“I’m not sure anyone other than you will talk to me, Ana. I mean Drake too, but I don’t like talking to him. Being the new girl here is like being a goldfish in a tank with piranhas,” she tells me. “I’m not used to how they fight. I’m used to fighting with my fists not by ruining someone’s life just for a laugh. It’s still early in the year and the things I’ve seen here are so passive.”

“Hit the nail on the head,” I say, nodding.

“How did you turn out so different?” she asks, picking her pencil, notebook, and laptop up.

“My father is not like the rest of the people here. He was born an outsider.”

“A what?” she asks, clearly confused.

“He wasn’t born into The Brotherhood. He married my mother and was inducted because of their union,” I explain, making her frown at me.
