CHAPTER 32

Three days and nights of continuous surveillance had been completely unproductive. It didn’t sit right with Veronica. After confirming again that all guests parked in the garage connected to the hotel, she’d purchased two pairs of binoculars used by Army Special Ops.

Still, they hadn’t seen Gabe leave. Veronica couldn’t shake the suspicion that he wasn’t just being faithful - or at least as faithful as a man with a wife and fiancée could be - he was up to something.

Next to her in the car, Ally stirred. The morning had been hot when they left the Airbnb and Ally had worn white linen shorts and a pale green crop top.

“Maybe he’s just not in there. It could be like in Philly where he checked into his hotel and then went right to Eva’s place?” Ally stretched her smooth tan legs and propped her bare feet on the dashboard.

Veronica refused to let herself look at Ally. Refused to notice her body. Refused to have any reaction to her.

“I don’t think so.” Veronica turned her attention back to the hotel across the street, but she didn’t put the binoculars back on. “He sent that picture in the hotel room yesterday.”

Ally ran her fingers over her scalp. She’d taken advantage of the lack of humidity in the desert and worn it loose and razor straight. Her light brown hair was glossy and gorgeous in the way only hair that had never been dyed or processed could be.

Veronica physically shifted her body away from Ally to stop looking at her.

A second later, Ally tossed out another guess. “Maybe he’s added a gambling addiction to his list of stellar qualities?”

Veronica responded with a bark of laughter. “Juggling lives until they fall and shatter got boring? God, let’s hope so.”

It was near sunset when Ally sat up abruptly and startled Veronica. “I have a hunch.”

“What?” Veronica blinked to adjust her sight. Her vision was tired from staring through binoculars for hours.

“I have a hunch,” Ally repeated, her energy suddenly bright. “About where we should go tonight.”

Veronica painted her face with doubt. Ally had the worst poker face she’d ever seen. She couldn’t mask the obvious delight churning beneath her skin. But damn if it wasn’t contagious. Veronica was getting sick of sitting in the car. Sick of doing nothing but waiting.

“Do you trust me?” Ally asked when Veronica didn’t immediately respond.

“No,” she lied. “But maybe I’m desperate enough to try whatever the hell you’re thinking, anyway.”

Ally’s hunch led them to a casino just off the strip. The single story building boasted chipping beige paint and a huge neon sign advertising an all-day five-dollar breakfast. Its small, round size made it look like a pimple on the side of the massive casino next door.

“Do you think they intentionally turned off some of the letters so it says SIN instead of CASINO?” Veronica wondered aloud before turning toward the dusty parking lot across the street.

Ally laughed.

Veronica didn’t immediately get out of the car. Instead, she scanned the corner.
