If in your shadow life as a mother you imagined a loving partner and playing in the garden with your children, whilst in your real life you were both single and living in an apartment with a window box full of dead plants, there’s a kind of disconnect between these two that doesn’t feel great. When you bring it into the light, it can stir up feelings of anger, bitterness, blame, depression and resentment. This is a natural part of grief, and letting go is what grief is all about.

I think the hardest thing for me is to let go of a dream of family since I had such a hostile one growing up. I think that when you have that hole, the longing for a family is especially hard to give up. I think the longing will always be with me. We all need acceptance and that is what family often means.
