GNSS/GPS for location

Any enterprise IoT solution, such as asset tracking/monitoring, that requires a location typically uses a GNSS/GPS chipset, which uses RF signals from an array of orbiting satellites to resolve an accurate location. There is a cost and power impact to IoT devices using GNSS/GPS for location which should be considered especially with low-power and low-cost enterprise IoT solutions. In addition to GNSS, many IoT solutions that require locations use a combination of GNSS with Location-Based Services (LBS) from companies such as Google and Microsoft. These location services use cellular and Wi-Fi data to resolve a device’s location where GNSS may not be available. Due to the cost and power consumption of a GNSS chipset, some asset tracking/monitoring IoT solutions use LBS alone to get a location that is not as accurate as GNSS but good enough for the specific IoT solution.
