As the gate opens, passengers stream through it. Up on deck, passengers and crewmembers are moving about quickly. Still, no one seems to be panicking.

You hear a crewmember call, “Women and children first!” as people board the lifeboats. You worry that only first-class passengers will be allowed in the boats. But now is no time to be cautious.

“Miss!” a crewmember calls to you. “Get aboard!” You step into the lifeboat and sit down. You let out a big sigh of relief.

The boat is lowered toward the water. Some of the women in the boat with you sob silently. Others call out to the men on deck. “We’ll meet in New York!” one man yells from the deck.
