Chapter Eighteen

Carter

“You’ve been awfully quite tonight, Ollie,” I say.

Oliver shrugs, but he doesn’t say anything. He sinks back into the couch on the other side of the room and takes a long swallow of beer. I know him well enough to know when something’s on his mind. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what’s got his brain wrapped up in a knot tonight. It’s most likely the same thing running through my head.

Max goes behind the bar and grabs us both a fresh beer. He opens one and slides it down to me. When I turn to look at him, I see the same expression on his face I feel on mine. He gives me a tight smile then turns back to the laptop sitting open on the bar and starts tapping away at the keys.

After the debate tonight—and Mia’s tongue-lashing of the three of us—we retreated to the basement bonus room at my folks’ place. It’s as if by some silent agreement we all needed to be someplace where we all feel good. Where we could be happy. The three of us have had some pretty good times in here over the years, and I guess we all just needed the nostalgia or something.

I take a swallow of beer then let out a breath. “Clearly, what Mia said tonight hit all of us,” I say. “Hit us all pretty hard.”

“Dude, I knew Jenny White. I actually liked her. She was nice,” Max says without looking up from the computer. “Haven’t thought about that name in a while though.”

I frown and look down at the bottle in my hands. I remember Jenny White, too. She was one of the cheerleaders, so for a while, she was in our orbit. She was nice and was always smiling, but she was never really accepted by the rest of the squad. She came from a very middle-class family, and she didn’t fit in with Sasha and her girls. I remember her being picked on and tormented by Sasha’s friends. She eventually ended up quitting the cheer squad, and I guess I lost track of her after that. It was an out of sight, out of mind kind of thing.

What I do remember learning is that life around campus didn’t really get any better for her. Sasha seemed to make it her special mission to make Jenny’s life hell. She even had a name for Jenny... Icarus, after the myth of the man who flew too close to the sun and fell from the sky. And Sasha had done everything in her power to make that fall harder than it needed to be.

“What are we doing?” Oliver asks.

Max and I look up, both of us surprised that Oliver has broken his near monk-like silence. I take a swallow and shrug.

“Having a couple of beers,” I say.

“No, I mean with Sasha. Why are we doing this?” Oliver presses.

“Because she’s our friend,” I reply.

“Is she?” This time it’s Max, who’s looking up from the computer.
