Chapter Seventeen
There was no reason that I checked my emails as I climbed the back stairs up to Ariâs apartment floor, but this was Washington, DC, and if you werenât busy and multitasking at all timesâ¦well, you probably didnât live here.
When I spotted the email from evite.com in my unread messages, I clicked on it out of curiosity as I opened the door on the landing to Ariâs floor.
Aston Li cordially invites you to the third annual Baby Mama Mingle family reunion.
He did not.
I slung the bag of take-out food over one arm as I reached up and knocked on Ariâs door, and she opened it moments later.
âYour brother hosts reunions?â I asked before even saying hello.
Ari grinned and stepped aside to let me walk past her. âThe Baby Mama Mingle? Yeah, I think heâs due for the third or fourth one pretty soon.â
I stepped past her and went straight for the kitchen, placing the bag of food down on the countertop. âYouâd tell me if my child is potentially genetically linked to a crazy person, right?â
She laughed and leaned against the counter, watching me unpack the brown bag of food from Five Guys Burgersâone of my favorite go-tos when I needed a feel-good meal. âI think it goes without saying that this child is genetically linked to at least one crazy person.â
I eyed her, smirking. âNow Iâm not sure if youâre talking about me or your brother.â
She shrugged. âOne of lifeâs great mysteries, I suppose. That smells heavenly. What is it?â
âDouble cheeseburger with bacon for you,â I said, handing her a large aluminum-wrapped burger that was bigger than my fist. âAnd a chili cheese dog for me. Have you had Five Guys before? I do a whole bit on them in my set.â
âIâve definitely never had five guys before,â Ari said with a smirk and clear innuendo. âAlthough most of my meals come from the freezer. But good call on the bacon burger.â
I shrugged. âI figured a salad wouldnât be your cup of tea.â
Ari grinned and offered me a wink. âYou already know me so well. Want to sit in the living room? Sorry, I donât really have a dining room. I usually just eat on the couch at the coffee table while watching television.â
âMy roommates and I do that sometimes,â I replied, picking up my food and following her over to the living room that was exactly as it had been last timeâlarge, soft sectional and at least eighteen different plants and greenery.
She chose to sit on the couch all the way to the rightâIâm assuming to give me space to sit beside her, but something about that felt like too much. Instead, I opted to sit on the end of the chaise that stuck out from the far side of the sectional and was perpendicular to her. It still put me close but with boundaries. We both began eating and there were a few minutes of quiet as we focused on the food.
âSo, howâs that going to work when the baby comes?â Ari asked, breaking the silence.
