Discovering and Defining Core Values

There are over 400 core values from which you can choose the ones that you want to define your life’s path. Some of them include spirituality, independence, humor, growth, happiness, power, progress, self-reliance, success, forgiveness, and many, many more.

However, instead of choosing from an arbitrary list, it is best to choose from those traits that are already deeply ingrained in our systems. These traits are the ones that we have unwittingly used or not used to make our earlier life choices.

This exercise of discovering and identifying your core values will take a little bit of time and energy, especially if you are doing it for the first time. But it’s definitely worth the effort because the outcome of the exercise will be useful throughout your life.

Step 1: Recall the best 4-5 experiences in your life – Reflect on the various events that have happened in your life. Get information from your diary if you have maintained one. Otherwise, simply sit back and jog your memory and think of the top four or five experiences that have given you immense happiness and pleasure. Answer the following questions based on those chosen life experiences:

What happened? Describe it in detail.

What were the emotions you felt?

What were your thoughts?

Write down the list of personal values that you expressed during the experience. And write down how these values affected your experience
