Libraries & Love Potions

“Here. Here it is,” whispered Radu, a note of unconcealed excitement in his voice. The heavy wooden doors of the library were open and a chilling draft wafted through the room, stirring the dust that danced in the pale starlight that peeked through tall, stained-glass windows.

The library stretched away into shadowed corners, an expanse of darkness punctuated only by the flickering candlelight the pair had brought with them. Dozens, or maybe hundreds, of ornate bookshelves, reaching towards the vaulted ceiling, lined the chamber, their spines neglected and dull with time. The scent of aged parchment hung about the room, mingling with the faint aroma of mildew, adding a sense of antiquity to the vast space.

On the ceiling hung long-dead wrought-iron chandeliers, and around them, painted and intricate frescoes depicted mythical creatures and scenes of long-forgotten battles, though much of the paint was flaking off to the ground.

The library’s towering fireplace, now cold and lifeless, loomed in one corner, its stone mantle etched with cryptic symbols and runes. Leather armchairs, worn with time, sat beside the hearth, as if waiting for readers long departed. A single desk stood at the center of the room, adorned with an ornate quill, inkwell, and an open book, the writing frozen in mid-sentence, a testament to interrupted knowledge.

“I don’t like this place. Whispers hang in the air. Makes my bones shiver.” Radu’s voice was low and tinged with dread.

“You’re a ghoul yourself, Radu. What have you to fear from haunting, or even death?”

“I can still feel fear, believe you me. And getting killed hurts.”

They deftly navigated the labyrinthine corridors of knowledge. Bravo’s heart raced with a mix of excitement and dread, hopeful that within these hallowed halls lay the cure to his curse—-if only he could find it.

Radu stayed close behind him, his large eyes glowing with their blue, otherworldly light. Bravo found comfort in this small reminder of his loyal companion, whose unwavering support had kept him from succumbing to despair in this desperate quest on more than one occasion.

“A question, Bravo,” the ghost whispered, his voice barely audible above the creaking of ancient wood and rustling pages. “Do we have any idea what we’re looking for?”

“No. Perhaps a book entitled ‘Werewolves and Their Curses’.” He jested lightly, and ran his fingers along the spines of countless books, their titles hinting at forgotten knowledge and arcane secrets. In his mind, he fervently hoped that one of them held the key to breaking his dreaded lycanthropic curse.

Radu was excited. “Yes! Let us hope we find such a book.”

As they rounded a corner, a soft, melodic humming caught their attention. Bravo froze, his senses heightened, his body tense with anticipation. He motioned for Radu to hang back, then slid forward until he glimpsed a pool of candlelight and a figure seated at one of the reading tables. Tatiana, the ebullient daughter of Akiva and Ilyana. Her lips moved as she scanned the pages of an old book, a lock of fiery copper hair tumbling over her eyes.
