Chapter 5
Brilliant Mind
Affirmation: I have the power to change my life, by changing my thoughts.
The thoughts you carry, day in and day out, shape your reality and help you to make sense of the world. They can carry you through life with grace and compassion or can inflict the worst pain. It was not until I started studying holistic leadership that I realized the importance of having a relationship with my mind. The beliefs we carry are stored because we were told by others, âThis is how you should think,â and/or the ideas were developed as you tried to make sense of the world. Did you know you have the power to change your thoughts and beliefs? If you are willing to step outside the box you have built yourself into, life can begin to transform.
After being raped, I held many unique beliefs about myself and how to navigate the world. To deter others from recognizing my pain, I always had a conversation starter to shock, awe, and make them giggle. The first story I typically told to new acquaintances was about my adventures of taking pigs to the county fair.
Many times, this conversation would lead into the process of preparing oneâs pig for the fair, how to get them to stop and turn with the simple touch of a cane, and what type of pig butt the judges were looking for. You read that right, pig butt! This silly banter could go on for at least thirty minutes.
It was a great way to deter the conversation from anything important. If this effort did not get a giggle, there were plenty of other stories to veer us away from any thoughts of thinking or feeling. If I had to see people a second time, I would make sure to have another conversation starter prepared.
I would talk about things like the summers I participated in Grandma School. My cousins and I marched around the alfalfa field with batons while learning to twirl like show girls. We rode the four-wheelers to pick pie cherries and then bake the tastiest mini pies in the world.
âGod Bless Americaâ was Grandmaâs song of choice. I still giggle every time I hear my little sister Chelseyâs squeaky voice singing, âWHITE WITH FOAM!â As children, we sang for nursing homes, the next-door neighbors, and poor Grandpa over a million times.
If the country bumpkin stories did not make the cut, I always had my adventures to Tanzania and Greece to fall back on. The time Chelsey and I took an overnight ferry from Greece to Italy always gives people a good laugh. In that adventure, we turned on country music on the deck and taught our fun new Greek friends how to country dance at 1 a.m.
I like to call these my comedic conversations. They made me feel funny, valued, and like I had something to contribute to our conversations. However, things always got tricky once I ran out of comedic things to say. The rest of my life was not as exciting as cherry pies and Porkahontas.
