CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Erika sat in her pyjamas, planning to demolish a tube of Pringles and the family bag of peanut M&Ms she’d packed for the journey. There was no sign of dinner arriving in Nate’s non-stop universe of drinks and dancing. She was happy to be back in the Bridgerton room after her unplanned heart-to-heart with Enzo. She’d told him how tired she was and dashed up first, avoiding the awkwardness of saying goodnight at the door.

She glanced up at the mirrored canopy above her four-poster, feeling like Anita Pallenberg, wondering how much DNA was still traceable on Nate’s guest-room sheets. She did need to do something about David. They had to face it and work on their marriage. Except, where was the motivation? The thought of working on it bored her. They were past that point, weren’t they? But no matter how obvious it seemed, the thought of leaving remained somehow alien, equally as uninspiring as the thought of staying together.

Noticing her phone, she took out her charger. It was not a good time to be worrying about her marriage, right before going to sleep. A selfie of Richard in a hospital bed and a text from Ursula greeted her. He’d been X-rayed and was about to be fitted with a cast. They had no idea what time they’d be getting back. Erika also had a missed call from Monica, but nothing from David. It wasn’t completely unheard of for Monica to get in touch, but at ten past eleven? She called her back.

‘Is David okay?’ she asked when Monica picked up. It felt so odd, having to ask someone else this question.

‘There’s a situation you need to be aware of. There’s a bit of friction, shall we say, on social media. A few exchanges sent from Matt’s account to David.’

‘From Matt? What do you mean?’

‘Matt posted an unfiltered reaction to David’s book, and, well…’ Monica paused. ‘It’s not exactly a glowing review.’

‘Right,’ Erika said, not entirely surprised that Matt didn’t like the book — the kid read Nietzsche for kicks. But why he’d choose to post anything publicly, she had no idea. ‘Well, it’s his dad’s book, so —’

‘Erika,’ Monica said, in professional mode, guarding her client’s interests. ‘You know I love Matt, but this tirade could be catastrophic. The allegations —’

‘Allegations?’ she said, wishing Monica would talk straight.

‘Allegations of homophobia, Erika. What he’s said is incredibly harmful. Matt’s painted David as some kind of bigoted patriarch. It’d be pretty damning from any source, but from his own son…? I’m sorry to land this on you, but I thought it best to call.’ She paused. ‘Especially as David seems to think you gave Matt some sort of blessing.’

‘What’s he talking about?’ she said, resenting the thought of him bitching about her with his agent. ‘This is the first I’ve heard of any of this. Why would I be okay with it?’

‘Matt mentions you and your work with Stix & Stones in some of the posts,’ she said, with a disapproving sigh.
