Importing plug-ins that can fix or add effects to audio is great, but sometimes we want to add short audio clips, called SFX or Foley, to enhance the ambiance of the story we are telling, such as the sound of a door slamming, footsteps, or the background sound of a busy cafe.

Key concept – Foley

SFX that are created artificially, especially for a film, are called Foley, compared to just recording a real sound. For example, recording the sound of gloves flapping to represent the sound of bird wings flapping is Foley. Foley, in this example, would be used instead of the hassle of trying to record a bird’s wings in flight.

Foley is often used when recording the actual sound would be technically impossible (e.g., bird wings flapping) or has a fantasy element (such as laser fire).

Foley effects are named after Jack Foley, who pioneered their use for Universal Pictures in the early days of audio cinema in the 1920s. A person who creates Foley sounds is called a Foley artist.

The good news is that we can import an SFX library directly into Resolve to use in Fairlight for this purpose.
