Be up to date with digital technologies in geography
Two areas that have benefited and continue to gain from the development of computer software and hardware are map work and fieldwork. The use of digital cameras, videos and other mobile technology, such as hand-held digital recorders and mobile phones, has created advances not only in the efficacy of the work, but also in the childrenâs engagement and interaction with their own learning (France et al., 2015). There is immediacy in using such resources since data gathered can be uploaded to class computers and whiteboards on return to school. This has allowed children to connect with what they are doing and become excited about doing it.
There have been and will continue to be considerable advances in the provision and range of digital technologies supporting geographical learning (Reynolds, 2014; Pickford, 2006; Russell, 2010). Increasingly, new technologies are available for children in primary schools to use, whether these are iPad cameras and data-recording devices for weather or information collected on fieldwork. It can prove difficult to keep up with the latest innovations and developments, but it is worth keeping abreast of the dissemination of innovative ideas on Twitter, for example. New technologies are soon superseded by even newer ones and keeping up with developments is challenging. Using what others have recommended is advisable. Ensure that you try out any new software, hardware and Web sources first. You can keep up to date with developments through the Australian Geography Teachersâ apostrophe Association SpatialWorlds site and the websites of the Geographical Association, Royal Geographical Society and The National Geographic, as well as through the journal Primary Geography. There is a variety of good advice provided by Pickford (2006) and Russell (2010). Sources for applied contexts include Nielsen and Webb (2011) and Reynolds (2014).
