CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Tuesday, Fourth Week in November

Kyle and Malachi walked back along a slightly different route, making an effort to be quieter than they had been earlier that morning. They bypassed the ‘gate’ this time and were headed back to Kyle’s cabin when they heard the growl of a motorcycle from the rear. Kyle spun around, unslung the Tikka and scanned with his eyes just above the scope. A bright green racer-type bike carrying two men came into view.

Doesn’t look like any of the ones we saw earlier. He brought the rifle’s muzzle down, still keeping a firm grip on the weapon. If this bike didn’t belong, Jeanie—the former big city cop that had devoted more than a fair share of her time to guard duty—would already have been lighting it up with Kyle’s AR or her SIG.

The bike came to a stop twenty yards from him. “Hey, bro!” his brother called as Greg killed the engine and flicked out the kickstand. “Forget about, ‘never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot?’”

“I didn’t forget,” Kyle yelled back. “Just a bit on edge right now. What’s the situation at Cushman?”

Matt and Greg both hopped off the Kawasaki. “Eh. Well,” Matt began, “that same gang put a hurt on them pretty good but they drove them off a few days ago. Things are . . . strange . . . there but I think we can count on some help.”

“You can fill me in shortly. Right now though, can you guys do me a favor?”

“What do you need?” Greg responded.

“Go around and gather everyone up for another fireside chat. This one’s important.”
