The neon red digits on the clock taunted Vezzo as he took a quick glance at the scoreboard. There were ten seconds left in the game, and every able-bodied person was on their feet in the stands inside the packed-out gymnasium. The Eastview High Bulldogs were down by 2, but that didn’t mean anything. Drowning out the deafening sounds from the fans, Vezzo’s focus was honed in on his teammate Marc, the point guard, as the referee passed him the ball. When the whistle blew, Marc shook his opponent and caught the quick pass from Vezzo.

With ease like they’d gone over nearly a hundred times before in practice, the two floated down the court. The defense wasn’t letting up on Vezzo, knowing he’d put up the most points tonight. A quick screen from one of his big men got him open, and everything around him stood still as Vezzo caught the ball at the three-point line. Going for a lay-up wasn’t going to cut it. He had to take the three. Just as his body extended, releasing the ball, Vezzo was fouled. He held his breath as the ball traveled through the air and pumped his fist when it hit nothing but net.

“Yeeeeah, Vez!” He heard Marc shout, now that his hearing reappeared.

The crowd went crazy as the buzzer sounded off, ending the game with the Bulldogs taking home yet another win. They’d only lost one game this season, and Vezzo was hype. His teammates rushed him with hugs and wide grins on their faces.

“Good shit, my boy,” the captain on the team told him. “You trying to take my spot or something,” he joked.

“Shit. I just might be,” Vezzo jested, wiping his face with his jersey. He was only a freshman, so he had a few years to make captain.

In the stands, Alora felt like a proud big sister. Krypt asked her to come with him to the game tonight since he wasn’t able to make it last week. Though she wanted to decline, it felt good to be around her community. They hadn’t brought up what happened that night at her crib, and until he did, Alora wasn’t going to say a thing.

“He’s going to be a beast by the time he’s a senior,” she voiced, leaning Krypt’s way.

“Fasho. I’m sure scouts already looking his way.”

“Did you play in high school?” She asked, and Krypt smirked.

“Nah. That wasn’t really my speed.”

In another lifetime, one where Duke was still alive, Krypt would’ve hooped or got out on the football field. He loved sports. Talks of going to college had even been discussed. He would’ve earned a degree in business management or pharmaceutical studies had he gone. That wasn’t his reality at fifteen, though. There was no way he was leaving his family behind when they had a business to upkeep. Krypt was a trapper through and through; the shit was in his veins.

“Really?” Alora was shocked. “I just knew you were out there trying to be the next Lebron.”

I was in the trap trying to be the next Duke Priest, is what he said to himself.
