Chapter Seventeen

Noah

My dad and I sat in the basement, lounging on the couch that took up most of the space. Dad had turned on sports in the background, the sound muted, and I knew he wanted to talk. My parents had been over the moon when I shared the news about Elena’s pregnancy, but I also knew that there was a conversation waiting for me when I got home. Hopefully, Elena’s conversation with my mom would be more encouraging than what I figured my dad would say. I had the feeling she needed it.

“You know what I’m going to say, right?” Dad finally asked, sipping on the beer he had grabbed from the fridge down here.

“That I should have been more careful?” I guessed, relaxing into the couch.

I wasn’t able to visit my childhood home as often anymore and that was a damn shame. I had so many fond memories growing up in this house and I always looked forward to seeing my parents.

“Exactly.” He pointed the tip of his bottle at me. “You’re lucky that woman seems to be in a good place, you could have really messed up her life.”

His words had me thinking about how lucky I really was. I wasn’t out there sleeping with thousands, or even hundreds, of woman, but Elena wasn’t the only person I had ever slept with. And if this had happened when I first got drafted to the majors, it would probably be a completely different story. Instead of a sassy blonde that I couldn’t stop spending time with, I could have been sharing a child with a woman who only wanted the money and fame that came with a professional athlete.

“I know, Dad.”

I figured that was the end of my lecture, Dad never really one to expand on a situation once I understood the gravity of it, but he continued.

“And you’re going to be there for her? Not just monetarily, but really there.”

“We’ve talked about it. I told her the day I found out that I wanted to be involved.”

And those words were still true, I had every intention of being as involved as I could. We’d have to figure some things out once I left Florida, but that was still a few months away. We had time without rushing.

“Is she going to move to California?” Dad asked and I looked at him with wide eyes.

Where did he get that idea?

“Her life is in Florida. Her friends, her job.”

Dad frowned, taking another sip of his drink. “Then are you moving to Florida? I’m not sure how you’re going to be involved if you don’t even live near each other.”

I didn’t respond, his words sounding a little too similar to Miller’s. Did everyone think I was just going to ditch her and the baby once baseball started again? Did Elena think that?

“I see you two haven’t talked about everything.” Dad stood up from the couch, Mom’s voice calling to us that dinner was ready.

“That’s a discussion for you to have with Elena, so I won’t say any more about it.
