Chapter 34: Cerys

‘Cerys, I can explain.’ Luke’s eyes bulge with alarm as his attention darts between the woman he has cornered against the wall, whom I’ve never seen before, Mam, and me. Something about this golden-haired, petite female’s stance sends a silent scream through my trembling body. Her fists are locked by her sides, and her eyes are battling with Luke’s as if it were a regular thing. Her chin juts obstinately giving the impression that she’s ballsy. Not at all like me. Knowing this gives me an unsettled feeling. Beneath her faux-fur jacket and low-cut top, her loose shiny breasts rise and fall in rhythm with her breathing.

‘I think you’d better,’ I demand angrily.

No sooner have I opened my mouth than a thunderous cloud rolls over us, causing everyone’s faces to darken. This is followed by a bone-chilling bolt of lightning that launches daggers of yellow light into the sky. While waiting for Luke’s explanation, we all ignore the sudden downpour of rain.

‘I didn’t know she was coming. I wouldn’t have . . . I never told her . . .’ Luke’s words come out strained as he casts a sidelong glance at the woman.

‘Who is she?’ I grind out, blinking away raindrops. But I can’t prevent the anger from churning inside me.

‘Less of the she,’ the woman protests. ‘I’ve got a name.’

‘Do tell.’ I’m being intentionally sarcastic. I hate her already without knowing why.

‘Lynn,’ she smarts, clearly rattled. ‘When I told you my surname, I was only half lying as it’s my mother’s maiden name.’ Lynn says huffily to Mam.

‘Lynn,’ Mam gasps, pressing her palm to her heart. ‘Luke’s Lynn?’

‘She’s not my Lynn,’ Luke groans, throwing up his hands in a helpless gesture.

‘What do you mean, Luke’s Lynn?’ I ask, my heart racing. When I glance at Mam, I notice that her steely blue eyes are locked angrily on Lynn’s and vice versa, as if the two women have a history.

‘She was the woman Luke had an affair with. The one he left me for when she got pregnant. I told you all this, Cerys, but you wouldn’t believe me.’

‘It’s only an affair if you knew that the man was married, and I didn’t. He told me he was single. I’m no homewrecker. And . . .’

‘Shut up,’ Luke yells in the woman’s face, hands rigidly raised in the air as if he wants to close them around her throat. I feel Bryn tense by my side and take a protective step closer to me. He’s got my back and I’m grateful for it. I could do with a strong, fatherly arm around my shoulder right now, but he doesn’t go that far.

‘Luke!’ I bring his cagey-looking eyes back to me. ‘You said you’d explain. I’m waiting.’ I steal a quick glance at Mam then but she appears as perplexed as I am. She doesn’t seem to know what’s going on either or what Lynn is doing here.

All of a sudden, hail stones suddenly ping off the house roof, causing us to flinch as they pelt our eyelashes and cheekbones.
