Chapter 30

Diplomacy

Mikaela spied Thomas on her way to her 3rd period class. He was leaning forward in front of his open locker, his head resting on his forearm. As she approached, he noticed her out of the corner of his eye and immediately stiffened, stood up straight, facing her. She sensed his apprehension, so she was careful not to invade his space.

“We got off on the wrong foot. I’m sorry that I threw you down in front of everyone. I’ve studied karate since I was six, and have a black belt. Not really a fair fight.”

Thomas’ clenched jaw relaxed. This was not what he expected. He blinked, bewildered, and warily nodded in agreement.

“Just so you know, your friend Malcolm uses you. He sets up the conflict, then slinks into the background, leaving you and the other guys to take the fall. He likes you around him because you’re big and strong, and that makes others afraid to challenge him. You’re his friend, but he’s not yours. I hope you figure that out before he throws you under the bus.”

Thomas stared in response. Deep down, he knew she was telling the truth, but he wasn’t ready to admit it, even to himself.

“Anyway… I am sorry for what happened between us. Maybe we can start over?” Mikaela offered a smile, stepped forward, and held out her hand.

Thomas guardedly reached out and shook her hand. “Okay. Yeah. Sure.”

Mikaela went about her day, not giving much thought to her interaction with Thomas. He couldn’t stop thinking about what she had said though.

After school, Mikaela met up with her fellow Drone Legends. They got permission from their parents to take the bus to ‘Old Town’ after school to do some ‘research’ for school. The actual mission was figuring out what the lightning symbol and Square and Compasses on the map signified.

Thomas followed his regular habit of descending into Chaos HQ and doing the bidding of his dark master, who had a plan in the works. Malcolm sat at his console, a silhouette outlined by the three large wall-mounted monitors, displaying the output of his various devices, including the video feed from Mr. Singh’s classroom, the security perimeter around his HQ, and the live video feed from Slick’s spy glasses. The latter was frenetic, the camera bumping with each step and occasionally whipping around, following whatever caught Slick’s attention. For the most part, the frame held the Drone Legends as they boarded a bus. The POV followed the trio as the boy-chameleon boarded the bus, so unnoticed that he didn’t even pay the fare.

Malcolm was obsessed with finding out what The Drone Legends were doing. Whatever it was, it must’ve had something to do with that robot quadcopter. Then there was the mysterious radio message he heard on the crystal radio that Slick had stolen from Baldwin’s, using the frequency that he’d read from Mikaela’s lips that day on the quad. The message made no sense to him, but he noticed it stopped broadcasting at the same time as the marooning of George on the island.
