Chapter 28
ELEVEN YEARS EARLIER
Tim hates Shane. He thinks I should break up with him. But what heâs accusing Shane of is a step beyond that. Heâs accusing my boyfriend of murder.
âTim,â I whisper, âare you saying you think Shaneâ¦?â
Timâs eyes flash as the room briefly glows from a flash of lightning. âItâs his house. If anyone were going to plan itâ¦â
âWhy would he do that though?â
âWhy would he beat up some innocent kid? Because heâs a terrible person. Thatâs what Iâve been telling you, Brooke.â
My legs feel rubbery beneath me. Shane isnât a terrible person. Tim doesnât know him the way I do. If he had been in the bedroom and seen how sweet and caring and loving Shane was, he wouldnât be saying that. Shane would never hurt anybody. âWhy would he kill Brandon? Brandon is his best friend.â
âBest friend?â He shakes his head. âI donât think either of those assholes has the capacity for that kind of loyalty. Theyâre friends, but they hate each other.â
âI donât believe that.â
âBelieve what you want to believe.â
âTell me something.â I narrow my eyes at him. âWhen you and Shane were huddled in the living room earlier, what were you talking about?â
Heâs quiet for a moment. âWhat?â
âWhen we first came in, the two of you were talking. What did you say to him?â
Even in the dark kitchen, I can see his jaw twitch. âI just told him he better treat you right.â
âI see.â
âListen to me.â His fingers close around my wrist. âThis isnât a joke. Shane is dangerous. And while youâve been gone, Iâve been searching the house for something I could use as a weapon.â
Thatâs when I noticed the object in Timâs other hand, that heâs been holding onto since Chelsea and I got back into the house. I squint into the darkness.
Itâs a baseball bat.
âItâs longer than a knife,â he says. âIf he tries to come at me, Iâm clocking him right in the head.â
âFine.â If Tim gives Shane a concussion, it wonât be the worst thing that happens here tonight.
He gives me a long look. âLetâs make sure we stay together, okay? I wonât let anything happen to you.â
I believe him.
When we return to the living room, Chelsea is still lying on the sofa, but on the plus side, her chest doesnât appear to be covered with blood and stab wounds. Shane is also in the living room, shaking water out of his clothing and his hair. I can see him just barely well enough to recognize he got drenched out there.
âAny luck finding a signal?â I ask.
âSorry, no.â He stomps his sneakers against the ground, trying to get some of the water and mud off of them. âI think weâre stuck here until morning.â
Chelsea struggles into a sitting position on the couch. âI hope Kayla is okay upstairs.â
I tug on the snowflake on my necklace. âMaybe we should check on her?â
âWhy?â Shane says. âShe didnât seem to want us anywhere near her.â
âI know, but she was freaked out,â Chelsea says.
