Chapter 22

Crystal

My source at the police department kept me as informed as possible about the investigation as it happened. For example, I knew from the beginning that the investigating officers did not believe Dolan Barrow had been a victim of the Crossed Hearts Killer, and that his wife, Alexis Barrow, was a strong suspect in his murder. I knew that Shara Hoyt had an additional motive beyond the abuse and that her investigation as a suspect was more in-depth than she let on to anyone, including Maureen.

I knew that Joslyn Carmichael was not an immediate suspect in her husband’s murder, even though she had the same reason to want him dead as the rest of us.

Even with thin evidence, the detectives assigned to the Crossed Hearts Killer case hammered most of us hard. Joslyn was the exception. Despite the fact that her husband’s death had left her personally wealthy, she seemed so innocent. More shaken by the murder itself, less prone to bursts of anger at the man who’d abused her for so long. She was the picture of fragility, of helplessness.

But she was stronger than any of them — or us — knew.

Sweet, blameless Joslyn had a tragic past that she’d taken steps to keep under wraps, and with good reason. She’d already lost one husband under suspicious circumstances before she met Matthew Carmichael and went on to lose another.

Our meek little lamb was actually the black widow of our group.
