Chapter 5

Money Made

“Giddy-yap!” shouted Krumbles as she tried to stop the horse and wagon.

Backwards was going too fast! Krumbles knew she couldn’t stop the horse and wagon. Thinking quickly, she pulled the reins to make the horse turn. Just in time! Backwards turned away. The horse missed hitting Mr. Lemon. With the sharp turn, the wheels of the wagon dug deep in the mud. They sprayed mud up in the air, and most of the mud landed all over Mr. Lemon.

A large crowd of parents and all the other Sisters had gathered to see if they could help. In an effort to stop the rushing wagon, they were all shouting “Whoa” or “Slow down.” And that was all that Backwards heard. He continued running as the children in the wagon shouted with joy. They thought it was all a planned part of the ride.

“Stop!” Mr. Lemon shouted, which of course only made Backwards turn and run faster. She galloped and turned, kicking more mud on Mr. Lemon. She raced, pulling the wagon all the way back past the noisy crowd, the shouting Sisters, and the concerned parents.

As she got past the others, Sister Krumbles shouted, “Giddy-yap” and “Faster!”

Backwards slowed and stopped right where she was supposed to. The children in the wagon laughed and clapped. They thought the wagon ride had gone just as it was supposed to.

One little boy asked, “Can I go again, please!” The worried parents chuckled.

Sister Krumbles sighed with relief. She felt good that everything had ended safely…until she saw Mother Mercy with her fists clenched and her face red with anger. Mother Mercy was headed her way, and—worse yet—muddy Mr. Lemon followed right behind.

“What in the world were you thinking?” shouted Mother Superior, struggling to control her temper. It was a battle she was losing.

“You kept encouraging the horse to go faster while everyone was trying to slow her down! You’re lucky no one got hurt,” shouted Mother Mercy.

“NO ONE GOT HURT?” demanded Mr. Lemon as he came up behind Mother Mercy. “Look at me! Look at my roses! I demand that you take down this Christmas Tree Lot!”

Mother Mercy turned to see Mr. Lemon covered with mud. He looked so silly splattered head to toe in mud that she forgot that she was mad at Krumbles. When he stamped his feet and whined like a baby, Mother put her hand over her mouth and tried not to laugh.

However, as the other Sisters approached, the sight of Mr. Lemon having a full-blown temper tantrum was hard to take seriously.

“Son of a Mucky Mess!” laughed Sister Lacey. “What seems to be the problem?”

Her comment made Mr. Lemon madder. He stamped his feet harder and shook his fists faster. As he did, mud flew off the angry man and hit Mother Mercy right in the face.

Sister Lovely shouted, “Stop!”

That was all that Backwards had to hear. With Krumbles still holding the reins, Backwards took off with a gallop.

“Whoa!” all the Sisters yelled, and the horse ran faster.

Krumbles gripped the reins and prayed hard until she was out of earshot.
