I clean up the toilet in the bank bathroom after my blowout. It’s something I’ve unfortunately become accustomed to doing these last few months: double/triple flush, wipe off the rim, check the seat, turn on an exhaust fan to air the room out. I wash my hands and my face and look myself in the mirror, and suddenly, I realize I never should have come here looking the way I do, grey-faced, spoilt T-shirt and jeans, baseball cap that’s ringed with a sweat stain white as a salt lick. I look like a poor, idiot farmer who don’t know his frontside from his backside. I look like I’m the kind of guy who mooches off the system, who can’t pay his bills. My sister would’ve known better than to walk into a place of business looking like a piece of white trash. But then, she weren’t no white trash, and I, in fact, was. Still, I had no choice. I was here. I was gonna empty my account to pay what I could of my late mortgage, and then I was gonna go.
