Chapter 10 – Claim

I had looked to the thrones, and the Great Mother stood, that odd effect of her overwhelming magics making it look as though she ghosted to her feet, misty afterimages fading into the ether as she smiled a genuine smile. You know the kind, the ones than let you know the person actually... well, actually saw you, and they weren't just going through the motions. The kind that had you smiling back on reflex feeling... seen.

And it looked as if she were going to step forward, but as I've witnessed before, it was as if the world sort of stuttered around her presence and she was standing directly in front of me before she moved. Ghosts of herself rushing in to catch up with her stepping through the very space between us without having to travel the whole distance.

I've heard Sora Misty speak of it to others as we labored in New Cali to repair the stolen Avalon airship. The Great Mother's daughter called it time slipping or something of the ilk, implying that time did not hold dominion over the Great Mother as she slipped through its fingers. Her whispers to her companions were that the ability was somehow tied to her ability to have visions of the most probable futures and project herself forward toward what she saw.

It all sounds so fantastical to me, and I don't pretend to understand it, but as all people of Sparo know, whether they be Altii or of the People, her visions have saved the people of Sparo on multiple occasions, so we know it is so.

But there I was blinking in shock as the last ghostly apparitions of her drifted back into her, leaving me looking down upon our diminutive ruler as she grinned up at me, foggy white magik tinged with the barest hints of amber and blue seemed to boil gently from the scars on one side of her face. It is odd, but those scars take nothing from the beauty of Laney of Wexbury, if anything, they enhance it, making it, I don't know... more real? Her natural beauty is said to mirror her mother's, the Shining Lady, Prime Techromancer Margret of Wexbury.

Before I could get over my surprise at her appearing before me, so I could drop to a knee and bow deeply, I was glurking as she pulled me down into a hug, blurting in her raspy voice, “Laura! It is so good to see you again. You're well, I trust? Resettling into your life in Flatlash after all that excitement in New Cali?”

I just stood there, stock-still, not quite knowing what to do when one of the Rulers of the realms embraced you like an old friend, while I tried to find my voice. She stiffened when Sora Celeste cleared her throat. Then she released me, squinted an eye in mock pain, and squeaked out, “Sorry.”

Then if I hadn't been watching, I would have thought she simply dissolved into that wispy mist
