Chapter Twenty-One

Nicolò

Thank God for adrenaline. That had to be the only reason I wasn’t panicking. Luca, not so much. I was used to seeing him as a barely contained tornado of chaos with little impulse control. This was on an entirely different level, and my greatest fear, outside the imminent danger of freezing or exploding or getting shot by whoever drove us off the road, was his tenuous grasp on reality.

His eyes wouldn’t stop darting around, his breathing kept quickening and slowing and growing more rapid again. Like a boiling pot on the verge of spilling over, his movements kept growing more frenetic and I think he completely lost the ability to speak after breaking down into hysterical laughter. I was genuinely worried about his mental state and even more worried about his physical condition. I could already see the bruising from the seatbelt creeping over his neck.

My own feeble grip on sanity was holding on by a thread of necessity. If I lost my cool, there would be no hope for Luca. For that reason alone, I barely managed to pull myself together enough to get him back on track, ignoring the throbbing in my head and the pervasive ache threatening to overwhelm my body. Not trusting Luca to focus enough on the task at hand, I moved toward the back of the destroyed car and tried to wrestle the trunk open.

“Lemme, it sticks sometimes,” Luca mumbled, grunting and straining before finally managing to get the thing open. My gut dropped when I saw the contents. Bullets were strewn everywhere, in addition to hand guns, knives that were definitely illegal, and the contents of our luggage.

“Um… do you have permits for this shit, Luca?”

“Dumb question. Pops is the leader of a fucking crime syndicate. You think we worry about permits?” Luca’s petulant tone was strangely reassuring. At least if he was being a snarky asshole, he wasn’t teetering on the edge of going completely nuts. I could work with his annoyance.

“Fair, but you realize the cops are probably already up there,” I countered, pointing to the top of the steep slope we’d just crashed down.

“Fuck’em.”

“No, thanks. Help me hide these, baby.” I hoisted my bag out of the trunk and stifled a whine as the weight of it tugged at my shoulder. The amount of pain was disconcerting, to say the least. Luca’s annoyance disappeared as his face crumbled.

“What’s wrong? Shit, you’re really fucked up,” he blurted, his hands flying to his hair in that tense way that usually indicated when he was swiftly becoming overwhelmed.

“I’m fine. Focus, help me with the guns. I seriously don’t want to add jail time to this little adventure.” I mustered up enough stubborn grit to start collecting the contraband from the trunk. If you asked me a month ago what my plans for Thanksgiving were, it definitely wouldn’t have been smuggling illegal firearms out of the damn forest after being run off the road in an act of attempted vehicular homicide. Welcome to my new life.
