Chapter

Twenty-Two

Giovanni

* * *

I left Isabelle and Abigail curled up on the couch watching a movie with full stomachs. Isabelle brought up her two jobs, how she called in today, but tomorrow she had to go to work. Little does she know… it’s not happening. I will discuss it with her tonight when I get back home. Whether she likes it or not, she isn’t going back to work. If she thinks for one second that her ex won’t show up to either one of her places of employment, she isn’t thinking clearly. She is safe at my place, where she will stay for the time being until I can take care of him.

I walk through the back entrance of Temptations. The music is loud, blaring a heavy beat as I walk to the private elevator that will take me to Antonio’s office. It’s late, later than I would usually be here but after this afternoon’s lunch, I wanted to spend some time with the girls. That spent time brought me through dinner too until I really had to leave for work. I would have taken the night off if I could have but tonight is our meeting with Cillian McKittrick.

All meetings are risky, but the ones that are enticed as new business ventures are always the most dangerous. We approach with wide, wise eyes. It could be a set-up, a perspective “new” business partner could have joined forces with an enemy of ours and lined up an ambush. Our heads are always on a swivel. Tonight, all heads and eyes will be on deck, even Joseph will be there to listen, watch, and absorb.

I’m waiting for the elevator doors to open when I hear my phone chime from inside my pocket. I quickly grab it thinking it might be Isabelle. Along with lunch, I brought home a new iPhone for her as well. She had my number in the burner phone I gave her but that was left when she came to my place last night. I told her to call or message me if she needed anything. A sudden wave of unease rips up my spine. I know she is okay. I know no one can enter my home, but the feeling is still there, and I don’t like it one bit. An unknown number flashes with a message.
