Chapter 12
Stupid fykinâ women!
Dagen waded through the water, feeling his boots tugging at him beneath the surface and weighing him down. How dare that haughty little girl question his skills as a thief. Heâd show her. He tossed his head and continued on toward the cage, keeping his movements shallow so as not to disturb the water and make more noise than was necessary. His sneaking skills were good enough that he could have walked right up to the nearest orc and stolen his clothes off him without him even noticing, but he was careful anyway. It didnât hurt to be cautious. Heâd certainly get away if the orcs noticed him, but the rest of them back up on the cliff wouldnât.
Typical. Thatâs why I work alone.
With the aid of the distraction caused by the strange sorcerer, he made it to the cage with relative ease, as heâd known he would. Several figures huddled close together within the bars. They wore the remnants of white robes, marking them as members of Ana-Settâs priesthood. At least the so-called symbols of purity and devotion made them easy to identify, even if they did make them a rather boring lot.
âWhich one of you is Teelaâs sister, Caeryn?â
Orcs moved about on the shore not ten feet away, conversing in their guttural, pig-like language.
âShh,â one of the figures within the cave hissed. âThey kill those of us who speak.â
Out of the corner of his eye, Dagen noticed one of the orcs on the shore lift its head and begin sniffing at the air. Fykinâ luck!
âIâm here to free you.â
âThe ogre came,â a woman said in a shrill voice that made Dagen want to wince. âHe tookââ
An orc jabbed a long spear at the cage. Dagen dropped below the surface and heard a muffled exchange above him. The waterâs chill clung to him beneath the surface, making his lungs scream for air far earlier than they would have normally. Why in the name of all that was good and worth stealing was he doing this again? He should have bolted the first chance heâd gotten. Seventy-five silver wasnât worth all heâd have to do to earn it. There were far easier ways of making that little money. Lifting it off a fat nobleman seemed like a good choice, especially if he happened to have a fair-looking wife . . .
He broke the surface and flipped his hair back out of his face, sucking in a deep breath with a sound he hoped didnât carry too far. He glanced around the side of the cage as he forced his breathing to calm. The orc with the spear had his back to the cage now, and a few others had moved closer as well. This was proving a challenge now, wasnât it? He fished in his pocket beneath the surface for his lock pick with one hand and found the cageâs lock with his other.
âLetâs see what we got here,â he whispered to himself. The occupants of the cage remained silent, though they moved back away from the door, as if to give him space to work.
