Dinner passed in a flurry of delicious yet uneventful courses. The small dining room was filled with guests of the inn, so our conversation merely floated on top of everything that really needed to be said. Meanwhile, our kiss lingered just under the surface like a shark waiting for the first scent of blood to send desire ravaging through us.

We ignored its threatening presence and instead focused on shared memories, reminiscing about so many things from our high school years—things that carried with them a new, more powerful undercurrent now that we knew we’d both liked each other.

By the time dessert came—a mouthwatering apple crumble with vanilla ice cream in a glass—I couldn’t stop the question that had fought its way to the surface.

“Why did you never say anything?”

Rex paused midbite and then swallowed. “You were younger…. And I was afraid that saying something would ruin your friendship with my sister.”

My eyebrows lifted. “Ruin? You give your crush a lot of credit.”

He smirked. “You know what I mean. I didn’t want to make it awkward for you to come over to see her and hang out or whatever if you didn’t feel the same.”

“So, what changed?” I asked softly, swirling the last bit of ice cream on my spoon and slowly licking it clean.

When he hadn’t answered, I looked up to find him staring at me—glaring at me, really, and the way I was sucking every last drop of sweetness from the spoon.

Heat bursting in my cheeks, I quickly popped the metal free and almost dropped it on the table in my hurry to release it.

His jaw tightened and he shifted in his seat.

“Jack.”

I flinched. “What?”

“As soon as he started talking to you—about you—I realized I could lose my shot. Maybe not to him, but to someone else.” He wiped his napkin over his full lips, and mine tingled with the memory of how his fit to them. “Suddenly, I realized that everyone else could see what I already saw, and I knew I had to do something.”

My breath caught.

The waitress came and cleared away our plates along with the rest of our conversation.

Suddenly, I had no more questions. I had nothing except the thought that we were about to return to our shared room—the place where we’d kissed and that had only one bed.

My heartbeat echoed louder with each step upstairs.

It was a mistake.

The road trip was part of the plan, but Rex wasn’t. Letting something like that happen again would be a big mistake on my part. It opened a can of worms that couldn’t be shut. More kisses meant more truths. I was desperately trying to forget how broken my brain was—the last thing I needed was for Rex to learn, too. I needed to put an end to it before it really made the last six nights of this trip even harder.

“I’m glad that we talked,” I declared as soon as he closed the door, shutting us in the small space. “But I don’t think we should… that should happen again.
