Chapter 17

The next morning, Jamie woke up disoriented. He didn’t know where he was, and he sensed there was someone in the bed next to him. He dared to open his eyes and was pleasantly surprised to see that Ali was sleeping soundly besides him. He ran a hand over his face, his hangover threatening to come to life, and he slowly got out of bed and made his way to the bathroom. He looked at himself in the mirror at his face which told a story of all the alcohol his body had consumed the night before. He tried to remember how he had ended up in Ali’s bed but came up blank.

He washed his face, brushed his teeth with a hotel toothbrush, drank a glass of water and headed back into the room where Ali was sleeping in a pair of silk pyjamas.

He stood for a moment, taking in the sight before him. Even when she was sleeping she was beautiful. Her hair was sprawled out over her pillow, and as she laid in somewhat of a fetal position, he knew he should probably head back to his own room but decided against it, wanting to stay a while longer and watch this sleeping beauty. Jamie slowly climbed back into the bed next to Ali, doing his best not to disturb her, taking in every inch of her perfect body dressed in silk.

He willed his brain to give him back some memory from the day and night before. He remembered their intimate kiss in the bathroom, and the look on Cormac’s face as Jamie had guided her onto the dance floor. He was so grateful that it was he she would be waking up to and not him. He felt things with Ali that he hadn’t felt with any woman before. He’d never had a serious relationship, although he’d courted a few women in his uni years, and dated other on his travels around the world that his job took him on, but with Ali he felt like he was home. Their connection was intimate and only theirs, erasing all memories of those that came before them. He really liked this exotic beauty, and he was overwhelmed by his rapidly growing feelings.

The stars had aligned and brought them together for this brief moment in time and he was grateful for it. He would make the most of this time together.

He wondered what Fi would think of their union. He thought she would welcome the news as she loved Ali and had always wanted her brother to settle down, but then maybe she would hate the idea of her best friend and her favourite brother doing things, especially as his friendship with his own best friend ended after he hit on his sister years ago. He wanted to confess his feelings to his sister, but wasn’t quite sure what those feelings were, and he prayed that she would forgive him in time, if she ever found out. Ali had
