CHAPTER 14
Parker
This isnât a real date. Logan is not my real boyfriend.
I think this to myself. Then I whisper it. And then, because Iâm totally alone in this bathroom, I say it again with force while staring into my own eyes in the mirror.
âThis isnât a real date. Logan is not my real boyfriend. None of this is real.â
Yeahâno. I can say it all I want. But the words are not making a dent in the part of me that feels like this is all very, very real. At least, real to me.
Either way, the truth behind this arrangement is not sinking in. Not even close.
How can it? I mean, when Logan is teasing about the rules, touching me, and whispering in my ear that Iâm beautiful ⦠yeah. There is a definite brain to body disconnect happening.
The best I can do is enjoy the night and hope Iâm not left shattered when Logan leaves again sometime in the not-so distant future. Thinking of him eventually leaving doesnât even sober me up. I am punch drunk on Logan.
Giving my cheeks a little slapâthanks for the suggestion, MiaâI stride out of the bathroom.
Iâm not prepared for Logan leaning against the wall outside, staring intensely at me the moment I exit. Iâm not sure I fully got to appreciate him in his tux earlier. I was too nervous and worried about how I looked. Now, as I take him in, I feel the need to pinch myself. Or maybe give myself anotherâharderâslap?
A slow smile breaks over his face as he peels himself off the wall and moves my way with panther-like fluidity. My steps falterâstupid heelsâbut Logan is right there, steadying me.
âThanks,â I say, giving him a sheepish smile. âIâm better on skates than in heels.â
âMe too.â
I canât help but laugh at this, and a few people just entering the hotel glance our way. With Logan holding my arms, the two of us standing much too close, Iâm sure we look like a couple having a private moment in a side hallway.
It feels like weâre a couple having a private moment.
âWe better head inside,â I say.
Logan offers me his arm, and Iâm only a little disappointed he doesnât take my hand again. On the plus side, I get to feel his firm biceps underneath my fingers. Zero complaints on that front. Would definitely recommend. A glowing Yelp review will be forthcoming.
âI have to warn you,â I tell Logan as we enter the room already filled with people. âMy dad will still probably try to pawn me off on some son of a businessman.â
Logan frowns. âYouâre not a pawn, Parker.â
Be still, my swooning heart.
I think I need to raise the bar for what inspires swooning. Not being a pawn should be the baseline of common decency.
âTell that to my dad,â I say.
âHappily.â
I have a sudden vision of Logan pulling a nobody puts Baby in the corner kind of moment. Yes, that would be epic. No, my dadâs birthday gala is probably not the place.
