Chapter Twenty-Nine
When Iz got home, she ran up to her room, feeling like she was sailing above her own life as if she was a balloon filled with helium.
She threw herself onto the bed, remembering parts of the day.
The gift of the guitar.
Teo showing up at Festa and saying, âAsk me anything.â
Singing together.
Leaning forward at the table talking. Really talking.
And learning how they were so similarâtheyâd both gone into a fog and been woken out of it by music.
It was so precious suddenly, everything to do with Métier.
She couldnât sit still. She jumped off the bed and started pacing around. It was as if Teo had ripped open curtains in her head and she could feel actual, warm sunlight beaming into her brain, transforming into every brilliant colour imaginable.
She wanted to explode. She wanted to create. She wanted to write something that summoned The Métier School right into her room.
But what?
Dr. Perlingerâs voice came into her mind. If the Beloved could speak, what would she say?
Iz laughed out loud, completely giddy.
The Beloved would say she wanted to be free to walk where she wanted and speak with her own voice and to have everyone know.
She would like to stand in that warm sun. She would like to not care about who was watching.
Iz totally understood.
She wished Teo could just show up at Patâs place and say, Hey, Beaufort, get your stuff. A bunch of us are meeting downtown. She longed for Pat to call, Hurry up, the bus for Métier will be coming in ten minutes. And did you finish your theory homework?
It was a glorious daydream.
But it was impossible. The only way it could happen was if she revealed everything she had done. And that would bring about the end of her time at The Métier School. It might even mean jail.
The Beloved could do it though.
The Beloved was not afraid to completely rip the world apart when she slammed the door. The Beloved was much braver than Iz.
A thousand ideas started crowding into her head.
She threw herself into her desk chair and spread out her notebook. She set up her tablet at her elbow so she could keep going over and over the lyrics for Winterreise.
She spent most of the night scribbling furiously.
