17. Word of Vayu
Josiahâs bearing was telling.
In Terra, he was aloof and even physically distant at times, a stark contrast to his current persistence to stick to Micah like glue. He hovered and kept a critical eye on his surroundings as if waiting for a possible attack.
Something told Micah it wasnât because of the god eaterâs presence but rather his brotherâs.
The sibling dynamic of The Four intrigued Micah, and he had a front-row seat to observe the dynamic of each sibling. Soon, heâd see what kind of relationship Agni shared with Vayu and what kind of god Vayu was.
Judging from what heâd learned so far, he was underwhelmed.
Micah and his group walked through the church, though he hesitated to call it such. This was not a house of worship like an Unda chapel, an Igni temple, or the holy gardens of Terra.
For one thing, it was eerily void of people, decorations, and fixtures.
Everything was white, sterile, and unnervingly clinical.
The windows invited the blood-red sunset indoors, becoming the only source of color in the otherwise monochrome surroundings. As they exited a lift, they walked down a long corridor before stopping before a set of double doors.
âThe High Priests are expecting you through these doors.â
The two Eurus guides took a giant step away from each other and bowed at the waist.
Josiah, dressed in his stiff military uniform, pushed open the doors. The royal guards also donned black attire, a surprising color choice considering their loyalty to Calder typically had them dressed in hues of blue.
It was likely that Ara, the palace coordinator, carefully selected these wardrobes to play a specific role in the political game.
Unfortunately, her design was about to be challenged.
They entered a small antechamber. The walls, floor, and ceiling were a shocking white, and the bright, electric lights blinded Micah long enough that it took him several blinks to discern three men standing before them.
They, too, were clad in white.
âPlease disrobe down to your undergarments and abandon your weapons.â They held a neat stack of folded white linens. âWeâve provided robes.â
Behind Micah, Conway scoffed.
âI donât thinkââ
He trailed off abruptly when Micah removed his outer coat.
âYour Highness!â he exclaimed, scandalized and tremendously distraught over the prospect of the crown disrobing so primitively.
âSocial statuses do not exist where youâre about to go,â one of the men responded mechanically. âThere are only the priests and the High Priests. Word of Vayu.â
Micah paused, staring at the trio of men, before resuming with disrobing. Without turning, he knew Conway stood stubbornly motionless. Josiah seemed reluctant as well, but even he began to unbutton his jacket.
âItâs merely a custom, Captain Edlen.â Micah glanced at the guards from over his shoulder. âWe are in their territory. We would expect nothing less if we had the same customs in Concordia.â Unfastening his sword holster, he noticed their continued immobility. âYou and the others will stay behind if you do not follow the directive.â
Conway exhaled shortly upon Micahâs threat.
âBoots and socks as well.â
Micah unlaced his boots before stepping out of his trousers.
