Chapter

Thirteen

Rose splashed water on her face and looked at her red-rimmed eyes in the mirror. The pepper spray had worked. The chimpanzee hadn’t reached them, and Bennett was safe from what would’ve been a dangerous brawl. But now he would want to know where she had gotten her pepper spray? She could lie and tell him she’d found it in the supplies the producers left in the closets. She hung her head. She didn’t want to lie, especially not to Bennett. Part of the truth then?

She loved being in his arms. How could that be? She didn’t know that she’d ever loved any spot in the world like she did Bennett’s arms. She kept pulling away or stiffening and he had to be so confused.

Saying a prayer of gratitude that they’d survived another level, she asked for help to know how to sort out her muddled feelings for Bennett and not make him insane with her mixed signals. She walked out of the bathroom and immediately her gaze connected with Bennett’s. His gaze reassured her and she smiled. Of course he was already smiling, but now his smile grew. She’d thought he was attractive the first time she saw him. After three days with him, he was the most handsome man she’d ever seen. That worried her.

“You all right?” he asked softly.

“No future bruises.”

He smiled at that.

“Ready to be done with today.” Please don’t let him ask about the pepper spray. “Did you open the next door?”

“I didn’t.” He studied her. “Do you want to call Mercedes and be done with this?”

“No.” She shook her head. “We’re more than halfway done, right? I want to keep going.” She had to keep going, for the children and her family. Frankie and Ari, she chanted her mantra. She wanted to keep getting to know him better. “Unless you’re done?”

He put his hand to his heart. “I will defend you to the death, Rose Lillywhite.”

Her breath caught. It should’ve been cheesy, but it was the farthest thing from that. It was beautiful and inspiring and she never wanted to face another day without him by her side.

“Thank you,” she managed. “Do you need the bathroom?”

“Yes, please.” He swept past her. “Can you get your gun out and keep your back to the bathroom door? Just in case.”

“Yes, sir.” She pulled out her gun and saluted him with her free hand. That was cheesy.

He grinned and disappeared into the bathroom. She couldn’t count how many times he’d smiled at her, but she still found herself out of breath from the power of that grin directed at her. Attach that smile to any advertising ploy and she’d buy it. She hung her head. She couldn’t think like that and ‘buy’ anything Bennett offered … like a kiss.

She leaned into the bathroom door and her gaze swung from the jungle room door to the unknown room door, forcing away images of Bennett’s smiling mouth growing closer and closer. What would they face next? Would they die for a million dollars? She didn’t want anything to happen to Bennett.
